“The painting “Secret Lovers” is as much a dream as a memory. We see an improbable couple suspended in the air, approaching in the moonlight above a romantic landscape. They have hats like those of movie spies, something that calls for incognito. For the rest they are naked. In Myriam Feuilloley’s work, the characters are always naked and bald; often anamorphic, strictly impossible, they are detached from materiality to access a dimension out of fashion, abstract. This style was born from a striking dream, from which the artist seeks to express the sensation of the invisible in reality. The painting is made in oil paint; the artist uses a technical process attributed to Flemish artists of the 15th century, which allowed the colors to cross time with an extraordinary brilliance. Feuilloley’s painting belongs to contemporary surrealism. She was influenced by Dali, Magritte, Delvaux and Modigliani, as well as by Hieronymus Bosch, Caspar David Friedrich, ancient Khmer and Egyptian art. She feels connected to contemporary artists Yun Minju and John Currin, who are renewing figurative art.”
